You Are an Artist! But what Is Art?

A Few Quotes..

“If I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint.”

-Edward Hopper

“The job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery.”

Art Is Not A Picture

Art — vast and complicated subject, yet so personal that it evokes myriad interpretations. It’s like a kaleidoscope of perspectives, each unique, yet united in their essence. All Artists, in their work and descriptions, echo the sentiment that art is much more than what meets the eye; it’s an exploration, a belief, and countless revelations.

So What is it?

This variety in interpretation raises a compelling question: “What is Art to Me?”

Understanding one’s personal definition of art is not just an academic exercise; it’s a guiding compass for creative exploration and focus. As artists, we’re often pulled in multiple directions by our diverse interests, which, while enriching, can also scatter our focus. Defining what art means to us helps narrow down our paths and shields us from the all-encompassing trap of “Art can be anything.” Yes, art can indeed be anything, but it’s most impactful when it’s a thoughtful, deliberate “anything.”

My Take

To me, art is about mastery of representation. It’s a reflection of something — an emotion, a thought, a moment in time. The deeper our understanding of our subjects, tools, and the flows, the more profound our artistic expression. An artist’s journey is one of perpetual learning and boundary-pushing, not just to evolve oneself but to extend that evolution to others.

The more I ponder and articulate my understanding of art, the clearer my artistic identity becomes. This clarity aids in understanding my trajectory — why I choose specific themes, why I work in certain ways. It’s a process of self-discovery that informs my role both in my life and the world at large. Based on my interpretation, I value art, learning, and skill. My path, therefore, involves creating art, constantly learning, and honing my skills. And I can extend this value to the world by teaching others the methods of creation, learning, and skill enhancement.

What’s it to You?

But remember, this is just my interpretation. The beauty of art lies in its subjectivity. It’s crucial to engage in this introspection. It’s up to you to ask yourself the right questions, and find strong solid answers. Being acutely aware of your thoughts and their potential directions is the first step in unraveling the enigma of art. Or maybe it isn’t.
